The basic purpose of a retail store is to develop an atmosphere that helps the retailer in promoting and selling products and allows the customers select and buy the items with ease. Because of this purpose, retail design involves taking into account several considerations of promotion, graphic design and ergonomics, along with the usual ones relating to architecture and interior design.
When the design for a retail space is being created, the designer must make it according to the specific uses of that retail space. For instance, the design requirements for a supermarket would be starkly different from those for an art gallery. When the design is being made, a number of aspects have to be taken note of, like the kind of goods on sale, the role played by the sales men in the sale of the items and the amount of the goods that have to be put on display. Some retail spaces only have to show some samples of merchandise, while, others allow trial of the goods by the buyers prior to sale. Depending on such requirements, the retail design will have to be different.
Other than the functional features of retail design, attention should also be given to the attractiveness of the retail atmosphere for the buyers. It is critical that customers feel welcome in the store once they enter, and are inspired to make purchases before leaving. The design of the retail environment has a large role to play in this and it must include in-store advertising to reinforce the brand so that the chance of a sale increases.
Moreover, the retail area must have a lasting impression on the mind of the customers, and should inspire them to return and make further purchases. A good retail designer will therefore give special attention to the ambience of the store and ensure that the buyers have an enjoyable and comfortable experience.
In order to develop a successful retail design, it is necessary to have an adequate functional knowledge of customer psychology, space planning, marketing etc. It is essential that the owner of the store understands these concepts in order to communicate the designer about his specific requirements and the retail designer understands them to properly work as per the requirements.
Designing the store interior carefully is extremely critical, but there is another aspect that must be kept in mind. The exteriors of the store are equally important and should be attractive so that the buyers are tempted to come in and look at the goods.
