Make Your Own Restaurant Success Stories

by Jose L Riesco

In order to achieve restaurant success, several targets need to be met. Among them are having all tables occupied during peak and off peak times, employing a staff that is dedicated to extraordinary customer service and up-selling, serving good quality food at a fair price, and implementing effective marketing strategies.

Translate cost control to restaurant success. Keep your inventory down by buying local and buying fresh, as inventory is equal to money. If you use raw materials and prepare to order, you can cut down on waste, another costly area. Always focus on reducing costs and streamlining your process when it comes to preparing your ingredients.

With any restaurant, location, customer-focused employees, good food and competitive prices are the basic recipe for success. Since all restaurants follow this formula, its important to set your dining establishment apart from the rest by finding your own niche. Whether its the theme or concept, a specialty dish, unique dcor, or a certain gimmick, the long-term success of your restaurant depends on it standing out as someplace special.

If there is one thing that can make or break restaurant success its consistency or lack thereof. Customers expect the same quality of food and service each time they dine in your restaurant. If they dont see consistency, it lowers their impression of your restaurant. Since the restaurant business relies on word of mouth, providing a consistent dining experience is necessary to achieve favorable reviews.

Competition is certainly strong in the restaurant industry, but the restaurants that do well do so because they have a number of factors in place representing stepping stones to success. Marketing goals must enhance and grow business over time, should be flexible, be adaptable and embrace technology, including online advances, to boost a restaurants visibility.

Many restaurants overlook an essential component to a winning business and that is attention to detail. Part of that is cleanliness and presentation. Everything in the restaurant, from plates, glasses, tables, chairs, flooring, decorations and rest rooms, should be sparkling clean at all times. Dust can accumulate quickly, especially on lighting fixtures and knick knacks, so nothing should be overlooked.

It cant be stressed enough how important customer service is to restaurant success. In short, customers are your business. The way they are treated can make or break you. Your restaurant plan should drive your customer service philosophy. All team members, from the front of the house to the kitchen, and even the cleaning staff, play a key role in a customers dining experience. If there is a problem, each staff member should know how to address it.

Many restaurants fail because the owner or management lacks passion or experience. Restaurant success is linked to the experience of the entire restaurant staff, as well as their desire to work in the business as a career, not just a job. Those who last in the restaurant industry are driven by success. Those are the people you want on your team.
