Primary Duties Of A Funeral Director

by Manny Cruise

A funeral director’s primary job is to make preparations for the burial or cremation of the dead and for the funeral rites that are held before the burial.

The important tasks of a funeral director include moving the deceased to a mortuary, preparing the body for the funeral ceremony, making preparations for the ceremonies where friends and family will honour and pay their last respects to the deceased, and performing the ultimate procedures on the corpse.

These tasks entail taking care of activities like deciding the place and timings of the funeral ceremonies, arranging for a hearse to transport the body, and writing obituaries and posting them in print or the digital media. Besides, funeral directors have to arrange flowers and have the decoration carried out for each service, make provisions for conveyance for the gathered people and clothe the deceased for the ceremony after embalming it.

Besides these tasks, a funeral director is also entrusted with the task of doing the essential paperwork formalities required following a person’s death. He helps the family secure a death certificate. He also makes preparations to settle any insurance claims, and helps the family members in applying for veterans’ burial benefits. He also helps in transferring pension and annuity money, if any, of the deceased person to the beneficiaries of the deceased and helps the family in assessing the costs of the whole funeral service.

Moreover, a funeral director has to coordinate with a wide range of people so that he can do his tasks in a proper way. He has to interact with physicians, priests, casket makers and flower sellers, all with equal ease.

Last but not the least, it is essential for funeral directors to be able to provide some solace to the bereaved family on an unofficial level, so as to help them tide over the loss of a loved one. Though some funeral directors ignore this responsibility, it is a crucial aspect in a job like this.
