Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in misconceptions. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Provided below are some common beliefs prevalent about hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. It is a very easy technique, which can be understood easily with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants successfully experiencing its power in public shows. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not exhibiting enough mental strength to withstand the influence of their words. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her mental strength.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized person is completely aware of his surroundings. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of absolute calm characterized by a rise in levels of attentiveness, and this intensified sensitivity helps the subject to absorb suggestions with considerable ease.

Some researchers have found that hypnosis succeeds on just 5% of the world’s population, and this is another common myth. Although, the research has some element of truth to it, what makes it hollow is the fact that the scientists made use of the same hypnosis procedure for everyone. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a workable solution as different people fall under different personality types, and thus respond to different methods.

Meditation and hypnosis are usually confused with each other. However, meditation is essentially a personal feeling that has got nothing to do with communication, while communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. Trance is again a mental state sans any communication, while communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis method.

It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause transformations in appearance or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural changes like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of inspiration in a person.

Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of an individual, and not giving them a try just because of some false notions is an act of folly.
